There is still debate about anoa species. Some classification considered both moutain and lowland anoa as subspecies and some other recognise two different species.

This is the smallest wild cattle species endemic of Sulawesi island. Anoa lives in primaries and secondaries tropical forest, mostly near water.

This species has a black to dark brown coat. The coat looks wooly distinguishing form the lowland anoa. Body is stocky with short limbs and thinck neck.

The anoa feeds on grasses including more than 140 plants species. Monocotyledons represente more than 70% of the diet.

Their is now reproduction season, and females give borth to one calf all around the year.

This animal is very shy and noctural. They seem to be solitary.

In captivity there is still only one individual in Europe. It is listed in CITES I.
