The Lear macaw is metallic blue throughout. Bare orbital ring and semi circular patch at base of lower mandible are yellow.

This parrot can be found in Brasil. He lives in the caatinga thornshub vegetation near sandstone cliffs.

He feeds predominantely on licuri palm nuts. also fruits, flower of agava and sometimes maiz.

Reproduction happened between october and january. Nest in fissure in cliffs.

Sedentary, they rest all the year around cliffs.

In captivity, this species is very rare in zoos. In Europe she is only kept in 3 zoos. She seems to absent of private collection.

This endangered species is classified in CITES I
