The Spix's maxaw has a greyish blue crown. Bare mask and aroud eyes grey. Checks and ear coverts are light blue. Belly is light blue becoming darker on the back, wings and tail.

This species is considered as extinct in the wild. The distribution area is limited to a small region in Brasil. They lives in gallery woodland dominates by caraiba and various cacti.

This macaw feeds on seeds, fruits and some nuts.

Reproduction happend between novembre and march depending on the rainfalls. Nest in a hole of a caraiba.

In captivity, is part of a world breeding program. Only a few institution are part of this program. The only specimen show to the public can be seen in Sao Paulo zoo and in Jurong birds park in Singapore.

This  species is classified in CITES I.
