The white winged scoter is the larger scoter species and is recognizable by its white secondaries. There is also a white strip under the eye. Female are dark brown.

This species can be found in northern parts of the world including north America, Alaska, North Europe and Siberia. They breed on freshwater pools and lakes but also in toundra ladscape, and sometimes, inland.

They feed on molluscs, crustacean, worms, insects. Sometimes they add to their diet some seeds and aquatic plants.

Reproduction happened between mai and june. Breed in single pairs building the nest in shallow depression lined with grass.

In captivity this species is uncommon in zoos and can be see in 2 european zoos. Some private breeders also keep this duck.
