The black scoter is distinguishable from other scoter by head and bill. Males are totaly black including the bill. There is a small yellow patch on the bill. Female are dark brown.

This species can be found in northern parts of the world including north America, Alaska, North Europe and Siberia. They breed on freshwater pools and lakes but also in toundra ladscape, rarely with scattered trees. Like other scoter, this species is magratory.

They feed on molluscs, crustacean, worms, insects. Sometimes they add to their diet some seeds and aquatic plants.

Reproduction happened between mai and june. Breed in single pairs building the nest in shallow depression lined with grass.

In captivity this species is very rare but some private breeder get some youngs each years.
